Meet Dan - The Shed Cafe

What is your position at The Shed and how big is your team?
My name is Dan and I have been the Manager/Owner since we started back in August 2016. This is my third café to date and I have been involved in hospitality for nearly 20 years. The key elements of The Shed being successful are quality coffee, great food, good location inside Royal Randwick Shopping Centre and of course staff! I have a great team of experienced chefs, baristas and all rounders’ working at the Shed.

What is the most popular coffee order and dish on the menu?
The most popular coffee on the menu is still the cappuccino especially amongst the older generation although we are seeing a rise in some of the black coffees, single origins, cold brew etc.
The most popular dish we have is probably the Vegan Bowl. It is a nice contrast of flavours, with some turmeric fused into the quinoa, pickled cauliflower and homemade thai spiced rice balls amongst an array of other fresh ingredients.

How do you like your coffee and what is your favorite menu item?
I like to drink a single shot espresso or long black coffees. This is the best way to taste the coffee and identify all the flavours and characteristics.
My favorite dish on the menu is the Twisted Avo,  it’s a slightly different take on Smashed Avo and is topped with a great marinated goats cheese from Meredith Dairy.

What is the most unusual or funny request you have had from a customer?
We had one customer order a Vegan Bowl but with no rice balls, no salad, no cauliflower, no pumpkin, no brocollini and no Hummus. It pretty much just left the Avocado!

What is the best part about your job?
The best part of working at The Shed apart from drinking coffee all day is getting to meet so many different people from all walks of life. Randwick is a great suburb and the people are very friendly.

When you’re not working, what do you like to do in your spare time?
When I’m not working, I like to visit other cafes to help benchmark what I am doing at The Shed and to generate new ideas. My family and I also love to snorkel and often head to Clovelly and Gordons Bay which are great places to see plenty of fish.

What makes Royal Randwick Shopping Centre a great part of the community?
Royal Randwick Shopping Centre is a great venue. It's an easy place to access and fits everything into your daily routine.  There’s always plenty of activities for the kids throughout the year especially Christmas and Easter.
